Differs from all other Salmo species, except for S. platycephalus, by the overall dusky brown or blackish colour pattern, without contrasting colouration on trunk and fins in adults (Ref. 50055, 55619). Distinguished from S. platycephalus by deep and narrow, and sometimes pointed, snout, large orbits (22% of head length) and more numerous scales (18-20, versus 16) between adipose fin and lateral line; large number of anal fin pterygiophores (12-14, modally 13) compared to other Salmo species (10-11, rarely 12) (Ref. 50055, 55619).
Description: mouth terminal or slightly inferior; snout blunt in females, moderately acute in males; snout length slightly shorter than horizontal orbit diameter (Ref. 55619). Large orbit, 3.6-4.0x head lenght (Ref. 94553, 94556, 94557) or 25-31% of head length (Ref. 55619). Maxilla plus supramaxilla short with convex to straight upper margin, rarely extending to vertical of posterior margin of orbit (Ref. 55619). Teeth on anterior part of vomer (Ref. 94553). 13-15 teeth on posterior part of vomer, in a zig-zag pattern; teeth on tongue well developed and arranged in 2 longitudinal rows (Ref. 94557). Body depth 4.3-4.8x SL (Ref. 94557) or 20-29% of SL (Ref. 55619); head length 3.6-4.25x SL (Ref. 94557) or 24-29% of SL (Ref. 55619). Caudal peduncle 1.5-1.6 longer than deep (Ref. 55619, 94553). Left side brachiostegals most commonly 13, right side 10-12; pectoral fin appendage present; caudal fin with modally 15 upper and 13 lower procurrent rays in addition to 19 principal rays (Ref. 55619). Colouration: large specimens with overall dull, brownish or blackish colouration; ventral side lighter compared to sides of back and back; remnants of 10-12 parr marks (Ref. 55619).
