Description: dorsal profile convex, slightly depressed at level of head; Ref. 3009 reports specimen with small tubercle at corner of mouth, probably representing vestige of a posterior barbel; lateral line incomplete with only 5-11 pored scales, curving distinctly downwards below dorsal fin; distal dorsal-fin margin convex; last simple dorsal-fin ray well developed, ossified at base; gill rakers short; D:III,7; A:III,5; P:12-14; V:I,7 (Ref. 2940, 81282).
Coloration: general appearance yellowish, back greyish; small round spot at end of caudal peduncle; some individuals have more or less distinct dark longitudinal bands on sides; pectorals dark; dorsal, anal, pelvic fins bright orange; caudal yellowish in life; males completely blackish with white tubercles on snout during breeding season (Ref. 2940, 81282).
