Diagnosis: body relatively short, its depth 11.5-16.7% SL (m = 15.1)(Ref. 57129). Head broad and oval-shaped dorsally; snout broadly rounded; eyes laterally placed; frontal fontanelle intermediate between long and narrow and short and squat; occipital fontanelle long and oval-shaped; "dermosphenotic" and supraorbital bones joined in specimens of about 100 mm SL; tooth plates extremely broad; gill rakers small and distantly set; suprabranchial organ somewhat reduced; pectoral spine straight (Ref. 248). Length of dorsal and anal fins 63.5-68.7% and 47.2-52.6% SL respectively; 59-66 vertebrae (Ref. 57129).
Coloration: no information on colour in life (Ref. 57129). Preserved specimens: dark brown on back and sides and pale brown to grey on belly; caudal fin with dark vertical bar occupying 2/3 of its base, dividing it into a dark anterior and a light posterior part (Ref. 57129).
