Diagnosis: preorbital bone narrow (Ref. 2) and scaly, with 4 pores (Ref. 2, 4967). Upper profile of head nearly horizontal, concave in specimens 130mm and over; caudal peduncle long, dorsal and anal fins do not reach its posterior end when adpressed (Ref. 2). Description: eye very small (Ref. 2, 54846). Interorbital space relatively narrow; jaws and snout not enlarged in breeding fishes (Ref. 2). Mouth extending to between nostril and eye (Ref. 2989). Teeth very small (Ref. 2, 2989), placed in narrow bands (Ref. 2). Pharyngeal teeth very fine and numerous (Ref. 2). Scales cycloid (Ref. 2989, 54846). Scales in 2-4 rows on the cheek (Ref. 2), usually extending on to the preorbital bone (Ref. 2, 54840). 6-10 scales between bases of pectoral and pelvic fins (Ref. 2). Abrupt transition between normal scales of flanks and smaller scales of chest and belly (Ref. 2, 2989, 54840, 54846). Gill-rakers short and bluntly triangular in males, often expanded to square or spade-shaped in females; no micro-branchiospines (Ref. 2). Dorsal fin spines increasing in length to the last (Ref. 2989). Pectoral fin not or only little extending beyond the vent (Ref. 54840), not reaching vertical from origin of anal fin (Ref. 2989). Pelvic fins reaching vent (Ref. 2989). Caudal peduncle longer than deep (Ref. 54840). Coloration: in life: females: orange-silver, light grey dorsally (Ref. 2). Caudal and pelvic fins light orange (Ref. 2), anal and pectoral fins yellow (Ref. 54846). Iridescent patches on the gill-covers and a blue streak on the cheek; throat yellowish orange; males: darker head and body (Ref. 2), flanks and back greenish (Ref. 54846). Vertical fins black (Ref. 2). Soft dorsal (Ref. 2, 54846) and anal fins with white oblique lines (Ref. 2). Caudal fin greenish-yellow (Ref. 54846). Both sexes: no stripes or bars on the flanks (Ref. 54836), except in very small specimens (10-45mm)(Ref. 54846). Each scale with a bluish central spot (Ref. 2989, 54846).
